The 5 most and least expensive hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area

And where to find the highest quality, lowest cost care.

San Francisco Bay Area hospital cost variation

When you’re looking for a hospital, quality is always important. But what about cost? Even within the same city, hospitals can charge wildly different prices for similar care—and accidentally going to a high cost hospital could leave you with a huge out-of-pocket bill.

Below, we’ve identified the five most expensive and least expensive hospitals in the San Francisco Bay Area using our Facility Cost Ratings, dollar signs that rate each hospital based on relative expensiveness. We’ve also included Leapfrog Hospital Safety GradesSM so you can compare cost and quality side by side. But first, here’s our recommendation for where to go for the best value care—hospitals that offer high quality care at lower than average cost.

You might notice some hospitals are missing from this post. In some cases, we don’t currently have enough data to display a cost rating. Contact us at support@amino.com if you have further questions.

Best value hospitals

These 5 hospitals have a Leapfrog Hospital Safety GradeSM of A or B and an Amino Cost Rating of three and a half dollar signs or less, making them a good choice for cost-conscious patients in the San Francisco Bay Area.

For other metropolitan areas, we defined best value hospitals as those with a Leapfrog Hospital Safety GradeSM of A and an Amino Cost Rating of two dollar signs or less. However, there's only one hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area that fits this criteria, so we expanded our definition.

How we rate hospitals by cost

Amino’s Cost Ratings are an easy to understand, symbolic system of dollar signs ranging from one dollar sign denoting “inexpensive” to four dollar signs denoting “expensive.” Cost Ratings appear on the profiles of all facilities (hospitals, imaging centers, and urgent care centers) in our Amino Plus experience for employers and their employees.

The Cost Ratings you see in this post are averaged across all insurers. For more information, check out our methodology or this blog post from our Head of Data Science.
